PUSH PROCESSING All color negative films suitable for the C-41 process can be underexposed and processed for higher than normal film speeds by extending the development time (push processing). If you choose to operate under these conditions, our best advice would be to process a small piece of test film, and on the basis of these results, decide whether or not to commit valuable pictures to the chem- istry. Otherwise, partially used working solutions left untouched for a week or more might have changed so significantly that you would suf- fer a dramatic decline in results. This procedure is somewhat risky unless you process some film every day or so to monitor chemistr y performance. While you’re usually walking and poking around, a half-formed monster chases you at multiple points. Players can eventually find those answers through new game+ and thorough exploration, but nothing kills a scary moment like relying on after-the-fact clarification to explain why the moment should have felt scarier than it did.īeyond that narrative disconnect, Layers of Fear 2 also has some gameplay issues that are far more aggravating than fun. And then, a vaster silence.” But those threads don’t converge in a compelling way, so at moments that seemed important, I was often left wondering what was happening and why. It feels like a six-hour trailer for a real game, teasing significance with vague foreshadowing and ominous dialogue like, “There shall be a vast shout. Some games benefit from an ambiguous delivery, but Layers of Fear 2 isn’t one of them. Stories don’t always need to be explicitly communicated. Instead, you scour the environment for collectibles like drawings and notes, and use those to assemble a fuzzy outline of a narrative – a process that doesn’t arm you with the relevant information at the right times. This setup raises questions I was eager to have answered, but the answers don’t enrich the tension. You control an actor aboard the ship to star in a film, but your unraveling sanity blurs the line between reality and imagination. If you want an oppressive atmosphere and creeping dread, those things never quite develop. If you’re content with the shallow thrills that come from unexpected loud noises and quick flashes of disturbing images, then Layers of Fear 2 might be satisfying. This instability is exciting and the visuals can be striking, producing a few well-designed moments that I won’t spoil here, along with plenty of jump scares. Doors slam behind you, and when you turn around to check, new hallways appear where blank walls were before. Sometimes you’re in a forest, sometimes you’re in a house, and sometimes you’re in a dreamscape. That’s not a bad thing like the original Layers of Fear, a big highlight of this sequel is how it toys with your perception of your surroundings. This first-person experience sends players through a linear series of corridors and rooms that are ostensibly in a luxury ocean liner – but the aesthetic doesn’t hold its form for long. It may excel at jolting you with quick scares, but the narrative and stakes are so obscure that real horror can’t take root. This is a lesson Layers of Fear 2 never learns. Suddenly, your personal investment makes predictable horror elements compelling and chilling. Now imagine that all of those faceless corpses are replaced by the bodies of your friends and family, and the creepy singing is the voice of your first-grade teacher. Doors spring open every few steps, each one hiding a faceless corpse, and in the background you can vaguely hear the singing of a creepy voice. Imagine you’re walking through a haunted house. However, when properly deployed, knowledge and context have even more power to transform simple scares into pure terror. In horror, mystery and uncertainty are useful tools. She told me funny stories about clients or things that were happening in her life. I read a lot of self-help back then, especially related to career, so we talked about our jobs. From there, the conversation would flow anywhere. She was observant, always noticing if I’d brought a book with me, and made a point to ask me about what I was reading. My stylist - let’s call her Kay - was good about not filtering herself, but also not making me feel as though I were on the spot. To make a connection, you both want to ask questions and reveal things about yourself that help the other person relate to you. To get to know someone, you have to start with small talk, but you don’t have to stay there. Don’t be afraid to go beneath the surface. 5 Ways to Genuinely Connect With an Introvert 1. That brings us to our first point on how to genuinely connect with an introvert. Perhaps the most essential key to success with an introvert is just being honest about what is on your mind. While we have to make an effort with small talk, a conversation can be meaningful for us even if we are not talking about the deeper mysteries of the universe or digging into one another’s trauma. Making that connection with an introvert who is important to you does not have to be impossible. Introverts can also find it challenging to connect with fellow introverts, not only because most of us prefer to be at home in our quiet bubbles, but because we worry about saying the wrong thing. I say this as an introvert myself with empathy toward extroverts who are trying - whether it is to get to know us or if you are an extrovert with a beloved introvert in your life and you want to spend some quality time with them. My stylist knew how to make a connection with me, and some of the methods below are pulled from things she did that were effective.Ĭonnecting with an introvert can be difficult at times. Most introverts understand the horror of sitting in the chair at the salon and having to make small talk with a chatty stylist, but this wasn’t like that. When I lived in Los Angeles, I had a hair stylist that I loved, and she was an extrovert. You have forced lower_case_table_names to 0 through a command-line option, even though your file system ‘/Applications/MAMP/db/mysql/’ is case insensitive. With MAMP 3.5, starting MySQL from the Terminal works without issue, but the MySQL error log – /Applications/MAMP/db/mysql/ – contains the following warning: In the version I was using – MAMP 3.5 – the MySQL version is 5.5.42. db-connect.Done a little digging and the culprit is the option The script for Database connection is given below. `id` int(20) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY,įollowing are the PHP scripts that you can copy paste in the htdocs->test_android folder. CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `firstDB`.`users` ( First, let’s DROP the Table users and create a fresh one in the context of the above application. Before we jump onto the app logic let’s work on the PHP scripts and MySQL Database. To keep it short and simple we’ll be checking if the username and email are unique during registration. We’ll be developing a sign-in/register application. Now that we’ve discussed the basic setup of PHP and MySQL, let’s get into the android login application part. If it’s not connected, then try restarting the XAMPP servers. Mysql_connect() is a PHP’s inbuilt function to connect to MySQL database with the parameters listed above. Let’s create a test-connect.php script and add it in the htdocs->test-android folder. Following are the inputs and there default values for a XAMPP server To connect a PHP script to MySQL database three input values are required. If the table is successfully created, you’ll end up with a screen similar to this: Connecting PHP to MySQL Database `id` INT NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY , Run the following query in the console CREATE TABLE `firstDB`.`users` ( Let’s create a users table in the newly created Database. The newly created empty database would be visible in the left sidebar. Open the phpMyAdmin by visiting Now select the Databases Tab that’s present in the top left of the headers row. Go To the Manage Servers tab in the XAMPP application and click restart all. Seems like the MySQL server isn’t properly running. Also, you can check phpMyAdmin by opening Let’s see what it shows! OOPS! You might end up with a screen like this. You can test your server by opening The following screen should appear. Launch the XAMPP app after installation and you will be greeted with below screen. XAMPP(or WAMP) is a one-click installer software that creates an environment for developing a PHP, MySQL web application (that we’ll be connecting with our android application). I am working on Mac OS X and XAMPP can be used to set up a local Apache web server and MySQL database quickly. The first step is to create the backend web server. We will use PHP script to connect to the MySQL database. We will develop android login and registration application. In this tutorial, we’ll set up a local web server and MySQL database. You will find registration and login operation in all the apps where we want user information. Android Login and Registration are very common scenarios. Now is time to use the "program change" messages to switch between the two maps saved: Go back to options -> Data Mapping and create a new map similar to the first map, the diference is that "previous track CC" sends a program change with value 0, "next track CC" sends a program change with value 2, and all CC messages are mapped to channel 2. This means that (assuming you did not change the nanoKontrol2 default settings) when you press the next track btn, midiOx receives the channel1 and is also receiving the forwarded "program change" message from midiYoke 8 on channel 10. Test your settings and see if when you press the next track button you get this (chose view -> port status): Ok save your configurations as dataMap1.oxm (you will need it, name is optional) then use the program change message to swap the current map. The third map simply takes all CC messages and transports them to channel 1, the thing here is that you will soon create more maps and change this channel map to channel 2, 3 etc. The second map receives midi CC 58 (the default "previous track" button CC for nanoKontrol2), and discards it because there is no midi channel before the first channel (optionally you can map this to send a program change message with value 15 to switch to the dataMap 16). The first receives midi CC 59 (default "next track" button CC for nanoKontrol2), and forwards a PC (program change) message into midiYoke 8 so that it enters midiYoke as input, this program change message uses value 1 to switch to the second dataMap bank (more on this soon on step 3). Im not going to explain in detail how to get this configuration, is pretty straightforward after you play around a bit with the buttons in that dialog.Īs you can see in the image there are four mappings: Goto options -> Data Mapping and get a configuration similar to this one: In "Port Mapping" leave only one channel active (i use channel 10) for the "Out to midiYoke: 8" and remove that same channel from "Out to midiYoke 2", this channel will be used to transmit the "change channel" CC. Use nanoKontrol 2 and a midiYoke channel as input, i use midiYoke 8, this midi channel will receive the converted CC from nanoKontrol back into midiOx to change the midiChannel (if you follow you will soon get how it works).įor output choose the same midiYoke channel as you did for input, and another one, i choose midiYoke 2, this is the channel that will send all the CC messages from nanoKontrol in the selected channel. Now what you are about to do is to get the output from nanoKontrol2 into midiOx, change some keymappings inside midiOx (for the trackbuttons), send the output from midiOx into a virtual midi channel (midiYoke) and then receive the changed output going thro midiOx into your DAW.Īssuming you have already installed both programs, first thing to do is to open MidiOx and goto options -> midi devices If you like to use the nanoKontrol 2 just to control specifically the faders and transport buttons of your DAW you dont need this tutorial, however if you would like to use the nanoKontrol 2 for diferent configurations and not be limited to just one channel i think you're going to appreciate this: Hi, if you bought NanoKontrol2 you may be quite disappointed (like i was) because you cannot use the track buttons to change the midi output channel and thus be confined to use only "one scene" if you want to use YOUR OWN configuration. These five art buying sources cater to all sorts of tastes, needs, and price points. Though the road to art collecting may seem like a long one, it certainly doesn’t have to be a daunting one. With its multiple layers and vast colors, the piece is one that has something new to be discovered every time that it is looked at. For collage lovers, Walking The Edge of a Dream by Xochi Solis ($600) is a surrealist masterpiece for a beginning collector. But, say your appetite is for something a bit more colorful. For the minimalist who does need a bit of decoration, Light Totem 28 by Christina Watka ($725) is an ideal piece to add a bit of texture to your neutral-colored room. The site has an arsenal of well-trained advisors who are ready to help you make decisions for art in your home and workspace free of charge (truly unheard of!). I like to think of it as the stepping stone into the big leagues. Geared specifically for the “next generation of collectors,” Uprise Gallery specializes in up-and-coming contemporary artists while catering to art collectors both old and new. Light Totem No 28 by Christina Watka Courtesy of Uprise Art Uprise Gallery “Study the canon whilst remaining receptive and hungry for the new,” Malone says. Once you know what’s out there, it’s easier for you to recognize which art keeps your interests locked and belongs in your home. There are two true keys to establishing your taste and desire for art: get educated in it and expose yourself to more. “I treasure drawings by John Singer Sargent and Ernst Meissonier- artists whose paintings I would never be able to afford.” “Start with works on paper as they are obviously more affordable but often just as effective as larger works,” he says. When it comes to beginning your collection, Ian Malone, A New York City-based magazine editor and art collector, thinks that baby steps are key. When I worked at a small art gallery in the West Village while in college, my manager always told clients “art you love will always work in a home.” And, last but not least, there’s the art collector who simply chooses pieces that they truly love. It’s not really about liking the art, and more about making sure the art creates a cohesive look to one’s home. What I mean by this is that some people collect art that matches their home’s, say, color palette. The second collects art purely for the aesthetics of the home. These are your oil tycoons and hotel heiresses who are often participating in the big auctions at Sotheby's and Christie’s. The first collects for market value and investments. I like to think that there are three types of collectors, and perhaps it is helpful to identify which one you are. Getting a sense of your own taste in art is a simple task that is complex in execution. Before You Begin Buying, Figure Out What Kind of Art You Like Luckily, however, I found a handful of online sources that helped bring the white walls of my apartment to life. As someone who grew up around and loving art, I was also struck with the obstacle of being a little picky. Where to begin looking for affordable original art then? I surely graduated from the museum prints that I had collected while in college but wasn’t necessarily ready to have a stake in the art that surpassed four digits. While I’ve dreamt of a private collection filled with Miros, Rothkos, and Alberses, my 20-something bank account snapped me back into reality. While my ex took the responsibility of furnishing the rooms, I had the wonderful task of curating the art that would adorn our space. The apartment itself was quite captivating: French doors that opened from the foyer into a grand living room with a fireplace and original pre-war details. Last spring, I moved into a gorgeous apartment around the corner from Carnegie Hall in New York City (with a now ex-boyfriend).
